Why Not Create a Bucket List for the Summer?

I was visiting with my daughter the other day. Summer is now in full swing and the kids are all out of school. I remember with my own kids hearing the same old phrase “I am bored”. My funny reply was always “I can find you something to do.” “There are always chores to be done!” My kids would roll their eyes and say “Mooooom!”

Well, my daughter had come up with this great idea. A bucket list, full of. fun summer activities. My grandson’s could not stop talking about it. There were things like learn sign language, tye dye shirts, get snow cones. The kids even let me add a few things. There are so many advantages to creating a bucket list.

It helps prevent boredom and excessive screen time

It encourages learning and discovery outside the classroom

It fosters independence and responsibility (especially if they help plan the list)

It builds lasting family memories

It helps develop planning and goal-setting skills

I have also included a checklist on how to create the bucket list.

Steps to Create a Summer Bucket List for Children

  1. Involve the kids – Ask them what they’d love to do or try.
  2. Balance activities – Mix outdoor fun, learning, creativity, and rest.
  3. Set a manageable number – Around 20–30 items is ideal.
  4. Use visuals – A colorful poster or checklist makes it more engaging.
  5. Celebrate achievements – Mark completed tasks with stickers or rewards.

Starting the summer with a bucket list is a great way to set the tone for a season full of laughter, creativity, and connection. So why not sit down together and dream up some adventures? Who knows what special memories you’ll create along the way!
