Just One Flake

I can see why this book was rated so high for children’s books about winter. The story follows a little boy named Liam who is absolutely determined to catch a snowflake on his tongue — something every child (and let’s be honest, plenty of adults) has tried at least once.

The illustrations are soft, calming, and quietly funny. Poor Liam tilts his head every which way, stretching his tongue out as far as it will go, convinced the next snowflake will be the one. Of course, each time he gets close, it melts away. In true kid fashion, he gets happily distracted along the way — building a snowman, playing in the snow, and just soaking up the magic of a snowy day.

Just when he’s called inside by his mom, and it seems like his mission has failed, there’s one last tiny winter surprise waiting for him. And honestly? The hot chocolate at the end might be an even better reward.

This is such a gentle, charming winter read — perfect for toddlers and early elementary kids (around ages 4–8). It’s the kind of book that makes you want to curl up under a blanket and watch the snow fall together.
